Evangelical Microaggressions

One of the most interesting things about being a Black, cis-gendered, exvangelical is that you experience microaggressions consistently after leaving evangelicalism. This is especially true if you still have family, friends, and coworkers who are still deeply invested in evangelicalism. It’s subtly draining, and due to the current events of 2020, I have seen more hemming and hawing about things that are historical facts, and as per usual in Evangelical la-la land, there has been a host of theological contortions than Cirque Du Soleil. This the only place (other than far-right propaganda) where there is more comforting of the uncomfortable truths of injustice and oppression in American evangelical Christianity.

That being said, I have found the way to cope through humor. The following are bingo sheets of the following microaggressions:

Some of the most popular ones I’ve heard as of late:

  1. You’re a Christian first
  2. Not All Christians
  3. You need to have a “kingdom perspective”
  4. This is teaching you to rely on God.
  5. This is a great time to witness to others.

If you’re an exvangelical, a none and done, or just “other” when it comes to your belief system, what are the micoaggressions you encounter with churched folks? How do you cope?
